Barbie Games. yes. It started pre shelter in place but ramped up once shelter in place happened. I have been slowly collecting Barbie PC games. Yeah. I had barbie as a kid but I wasnt overtly barbie obsessed.
This interest was sparked at the very end of my last year of Grad School when I heard Adam Conover interview Rachel Weil who founded the Femicom Museum. Basically, one take away from this interview is that video games made for girls are not being preserved at the same intensity as games marketed to boys. One big this about this podcast episode was that a wikipedia page didn’t even exist for Barbie Fashion Designer, even though it was one of the top selling games in 1996. After the podcast aired a wikipedia page was created. My interest in girl games and preserving them ramped up since I heard this interview. I kept it on the back burner as a zine project of some kind, maybe even with my sister, for the 2.5 years since hearing it. But it just never happened. I even started writing some essays for this blog / or zines but they fell to the wayside. Then late last year I discovered my favorite local thrift store had tons and tons of children’s PC games for $2 each.
I have only bought one eBay barbie game since I had an itch and a request and thrift stores have been closed since March. I have been slowly Uploading scans of what I own to the Internet Archive. I found that there are a lot of games up there already but I had a lot that weren’t. Even if it is just the manuals. I’m just trying to fill in any gaps that are out there from what I’ve found at the thrift store.
But here’s been one of my big problems. I can not find a single list of every barbie game made. I can find what I believe to be complete lists of console games but not one that includes PC games. Not wikipedia, not giant bomb, not moby games (i’ll admit they are super close), not even the barbie wiki. So here I have compiled what i can find as every barbie game ever made. Ive put what I own in bold. Release date, specific OS, and regions are not complete or double checked yet. Also sorry these are not in any real order.
